Skincare and the City

We all know there are many benefits to living in a big city: great shopping, restaurants and events just to name a few. But with city dwelling, also comes a unique list of downfalls. Traffic, higher expenses, and one that’s often forgotten – air pollution. We’ve all heard it countless times: air pollution from cars, industries and high-rises are quickly destroying our planet. However, air pollution isn’t just a problem for the environment; it can also be detrimental to our skin.

Constant exposure to air pollution “Can affect the integrity of the epidermal barrier.  We need more scientific studies to really understand this.  It’s true that our environment has never been as polluted as it is now,” says our resident skincare expert Dr. Lisa Kellett. In other words, pollution in the air can make your skin more sensitive and susceptible to breakouts and wrinkles.

In addition to the always crucial sun protection, using some sort of barrier against pollution is super important. Dr. Kellett recommends hyaluronic acid as one option – this ingredient is “a water-loving substance that attracts moisture to the skin and can help with the appearance of fine lines and give skin a nice, smooth texture” in addition to providing a barrier to the harsh outside world.

Establishing a strong routine of cleansing the skin of any contaminants, as well as using some sort of barrier to this harsh environment is crucial.  It’s so important to make sure your skin is ready for whatever the city hits it with.
