Chin Up, Guys

It’s not just the ladies who obsess over their sagging neck, jowels and less defined jawline. There has also been a dramatic increase in the number of men seeking facial and body contouring procedures.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) procedures for men are up 43% over the last five years.

These men don’t want to look different they just want to look vibrant, youthful and healthy says Dr. Peter Bray, a board certified plastic surgeon who specializes in male plastic surgery (40% of his patients are men).

With George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s jawlines being the masculine ideal, Dr. Bray treats sagging jawlines on an individual case-by-case basis. “Non-invasive cosmetic procedures improve neck and jawlines, weakened by the normal aging process, are gaining in popularity among men in there 40s and 50s. [These] men do not want to look different; they just want to maintain the strong-jawed presence.”

However, with more and more men holding top executive positions in there 30s, it is no surprise that Dr. Bray notes that he has seen a growing number of patients in this demographic turning to plastic surgery. “These men believe that an enhanced appearance will give them an edge when it comes to the job market and the dating scene,” says Dr. Bray.

What the guys are getting done

Dr. Bray uses Radio-Frequency Assisted Liposuction (RFAL) to give his male patients the sculpted body and jaw they desire. RFAL removes the pocket of fat just under the jawline and simultaneously tightens skin, thereby giving the area better definition and a more youthful appearance.

Dr. Bray also uses HA dermal fillers or Micro Fat injections to add projection to the chin and/or shape and widen the jawline. Chin enhancement procedures have increased 7% over last year and is the most popular male cosmetic procedure next to liposuction, according to the American Society of American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS).

“FaceTITE” and NeckTITE are my preferred techniques for patients who neither need nor want a full face and/or neck lift,” says Dr. Bray. “While these procedures don’t produce the same results as a full lift, they are a leap beyond laser treatment and provide a great middle-ground. I feel they are the best, new options available to improve face and neck appearance and signs of aging.” FaceTITE is used to smooth and tighten the face; there is no fat removal involved. It works by gently warming up the skin from beneath, stimulating contraction of the collagen fibers as well as laying down a new layer of collagen. NeckTITE goes one step further by gently removing excess fat from under the chin in addition to tightening and contouring. These procedures are done through tiny, hidden incisions and can be performed under local anesthetic. The recovery time is typically about a week and most patients will experience some bruising and swelling. Patients can expect to look a little puffy in the days following the procedure.

By using a combination of FaceTITE, NeckTITE and micro-fat or HA dermal fillers like Juvederm, Dr. Bray is able to tighten sagging jowls and get rid of excess fat below the chin and augment the chin and/or jawline without the tell tale appearance of someone who has undergone major facial surgery. In some cases, Dr. Bray also recommends chin implants to correct a weak chin.“Male patients seeking a more defined jawline and contoured neck can achieve outstanding results with these procedures,” says Dr. Bray.
