Josie Maran Argan Oil

Josie Maran Argan Oil Hair Serum, $30 at Sephora

What it is: A blend of argan, jojoba and avocado oils and vitamin E, which work together to moisturize, strengthen and restore elasticity to hair.  It is lightly scented with geranium and bergamot fruit oils.  This product is made with (mostly) natural, organic ingredients and is paraben, cruelty and synthetic fragrance free. The glass bottle it comes in is recyclable.

About the company: You might be wondering what Josie Maran, a supermodel from the early 2000s, is doing selling you beauty products. Well, it seems that this has become a popular path for models needing to transition into a more, ahem, mature career (see Cindy Crawford, Iman, Jemma Kidd and May Lindstrom.) Let’s give Josie her due, though.  This natural beauty has racked up many years of working experience with top make-up artists, dermatologists and beauty brands (she was a Maybelline spokesmodel), so she may actually know a thing or two about looking good.

Though there has been some evidence to suggest otherwise, Josie Maran Cosmetics considers itself a green company devoted to providing luxurious, organic products while following environmentally sound business practices and investing in give-back programs.  It’s won numerous industry awards since its inception six years ago and has a devoted consumer following.  As for what I think, well, I’m always in support of the green-minded, unimpeachable or not.

Why I like it: I’ve been in the process of growing out my pixie cut for the last six months which of course means that I now find myself in that dreaded no man’s land of hairstyles – somewhere below the eyes but above the chin.  This is a rough spot for anyone to be in but even harder for someone with coarse, wavy hair, like me.  When my hair was at its shortest, I was able to just wash, add a dab of something and go.  During the summer, I often switched out my standard styling cream for this ultra lightweight serum.  It added tons of shine and some basic frizz control without the added weight.  As my locks lengthened and grew a little wilder, I decided I could no longer forgo the blow dryer.  These below zero days are certainly not wet hair friendly either.  Nowadays, I add a couple of pumps of the Josie Maran Argan Oil Hair Serum into my towel-dried hair before blasting the crazies out of it with a little hot air.  The serum protects my hair from the heat and helps keep the hair shaft smooth.

As far as hair oils go, I really like this one.  Though it definitely couldn’t tame the profoundly frizzy, it successfully smooths dry ends.  It also absorbs really well, which can’t be said for most products of this kind.  My hair is always left soft, ultra-shiny and, thanks to the bergamot, smelling ever-so-subtly like a fresh cup of tea.

  1. Hi, thank you for the info. I haven’t used any other brand other than Pro Naturals because I found it is the only one that doesn’t leave my hair greasy looking.
