Digital Exec: Duke McKenzie
“Littlest Lamb supporter.” That’s how this online media guru and angel investor (he’s a panelist on The Pitch, a Dragon’s Den-esque show on the Business News Network) describes himself on his Twitter account.
“Duke is a brilliant boss and a stand up guy.” That’s how my pal describes his former boss at Mediative, a digital media sales company that handles big-name properties such as Martha Stewart, Autos.ca and Walmart. In 2010, Duke was named one of “Canada’s 40 under 40” by Caldwell Partners International, for his outstanding contribution to the Canadian digital advertising industry. Now at 37, he’s the lead investor at eLuxe, Canada’s online shopping hub of designer brands started by entrepreneur Joanna Track of sweetspot.ca fame.
The first time I met Duke was for a brief moment at Mediative’s Christmas party in downtown Toronto. Not only was he down-to-earth, but he seemed like the kind of boss you feel empowered around. Coworkers, like my friend, have a deep respect for him. Determined to really meet him, I sleuthed him out on LinkedIN. To my surprise, he accepted my humble request for a sit-down interview at the eLuxe offices – and had a good chuckle at my next request: “Can I also take a peek in your medicine cabinet? I’d like to know what kind of skin care you use.”
“Hmmmmm….sure. Should I bring my Travel Kit?” And just like that, this little lamb scored an exclusive peek into the skincare kit of, quite possibly, every person’s dream boss. (Side note: He closes business deals with top shelf tequila – no stuffy scotch for this modern biz man.)
Skin Type? Dry.
Your most recent What The Yuck?! skin moment? I’m starting to notice the effects of travelling on the skin underneath my eyes.
Your 3 can’t-live without skincare staples?
- Vaseline for the lips
- Kiehl’s Eye Alert eye cream to combat puffiness and dark circles
- Malin + Goetz Moisturizer. I use this on my face and body; I don’t have a lot of time to fuss with a separate cream for the face. Double-duty products save time.
If you could trade dermatologist with any celebrity, who would it be?
Denzel Washington. I also want his swagger at that age.
Favorite food? Pizza
Most overused word? Um. (I catch myself saying it too.)
Favorite saying? We’re going to kill it!
