Triathlete: Anna Cleaver

Extreme exercise calls for a simple, results-driven skincare routine. And no other group can appreciate this more than professional athletes.

“I expose my skin to wind, sun, chlorine, ocean, rain, pretty much everything!” Says Anna Cleaver, a triathlete from Greenville South Carolina, who is a huge fan of Dr. Lisa Kellett’s 4-step Clear Skincare Regimen Kit ($220, kellettskincare.com), designed to battle adult acne and fine lines.

According to Cleaver, “Many female triathletes, cyclists, runners and swimmers have breakouts, dryness, and irritated skin due to the nature of what we do. We are continuously applying sunscreen, which with many products seems to sweat right off. The sport is not kind to our skin.”

Cleaver has been using the Clear system for four months now and says that it has normalized her oily, irritated skin. No longer does she get the post-workout breakouts she associated with excessive sweating and sunscreen use. “The changes in my skin’s appearance and feel since using the Kellett Skincare range are dramatic. I no longer get irritated or inflamed skin after exposure to sun, chlorine, sweat. The range has reduced breakouts and improved pigmentation.”

The 4-step Clear kit consists of a gentle exfoliating cleanser, a gel moisturizer for day and night time use, a spray sunscreen with SPF 30, and a 5% benzoyl peroxide-based acne treatment cream.

“It is a simple skincare program that has an impact extremely quickly. I think it is a fantastic range for athletes. Dr. Kellett even produces a great sunscreen that does not sweat off!”

A typical day for Cleaver involves waking up at the crack of dawn to train, all day long, and then spending the evenings at home working on various sponsored-based projects. Right now, she’s working with Hincapie Sportswear on hosting several upcoming triathlon training events, as well as, putting together swimming programs with Team Kattouf at swim clinics across the Carolinas.

For this rising star who had humble beginnings in the sport – Cleaver taught herself how to swim at age 6, and quit her cushy corporate finance job in her late twenties to compete professionally in the U.S., – juggling it all is something that she feels she hasn’t yet mastered. “I am not sure I have achieved the balanced life I desire yet, but I am always striving to. I believe in having more than one goal or focus. Sport is a big part of my life. But an injury or bout of illness can take this away very quickly. For me, it is therefore important to have multiple goals and sources of happiness.”

So what does a triathlete need for basic happiness, at least from a material standpoint? We asked Cleaver, “If you were on a deserted island, what are your 3 must-have items?” Cleaver tops her list with Isagenix smoothie powders (“I am unlikely to be a great hunter or fisher so best to have a back up for food); A journal and pen (“If I am going to be there for a while I want to record the amazing adventures and probably the crazy thoughts I will have”); And lastly as she contemplates which Kellett Skincare product, she says “it’s hard to choose just one because they compliment each other and provide a complete skin solution for me, as a package. But if I have to pick just one, the Moisturizing Gel.”

Packed with anti-inflammatory ingredients in a soothing gel base (perfect for calming skin irritations cast away living would surely bring), we couldn’t agree more with Cleaver’s top product pick.
