5 Ways to Cope With Severe Adult Acne
If you think struggling with teen acne is tough, imagine going through it as an adult. A big misconception about acne is that everyone grows out of it.
But get this…according to the Academy of Dermatology, 70 million adult Americans will suffer from acne – more than 50% being women!
Realistically, nobody’s skin is perfect all the time and for many this can really affect their quality of life. In order to maintain a healthy self-esteem, you must learn how to cope with your skin.
I am going to share 5 tips on how to cope with severe adult acne.
Tip 1: Make Time to Relax
When I was growing up people told me that stress could cause acne. I never knew why I just took their word for it but didn’t give it a second thought – until now.
I recently learned that stress could actually cause thicker sebum, which increases the chance of acne forming.
Once I learned this I told myself “okay Jaclyn you need to relax, your skin and your mind need you to be calm!”
It took me some trial and error to realize that for me, fresh air and walking are what relax me.
Disclaimer: Doing activities that reduce your stress may not clear up your current acne, but it may prevent future acne from forming.
Tip 2: Remember You Are Not Alone
I used to see my acne as something holding me back. I was positive that having acne was going to get in the way of my success because of how self-conscious it made me.
One thing that made me overcome this fear was looking into celebrities or public figures that suffered from acne and other skin issues. Did you know that Kim Kardashian suffers from Psoriasis. Read More Here
Knowing that celebrities can deal with acne reassures me I can do the same.
Tip 3: Educate Educate Educate
You are not doing yourself any favours by not looking into what may be causing or contributing to your acne. The more you understand your acne, the easier it is to treat!
What causes acne?
For myself personally, I realized an external factor that triggers my acne is face makeup. Cutting out fragranced or heavy foundation alone improved my skin significantly.
Tip 4: Take Advantage of the Good Days
How often do you really take the time to be grateful for good skin days? I’m just taking a crazy guess here and saying probably not enough.
The next time you notice your skin is better than the previous day, I want you to take a minute, look in the mirror and really appreciate it.
Here is an example of what I say to myself on my “good skin days”
Even if you don’t fully believe it, simply saying it can trick your brain into believing it.
Tip 5: Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help
Seeking help does not make you weak. In fact, it makes you smart.
Ask
Sometimes the smartest thing someone suffering from acne can do is find a dermatologist to guide them in the right direction. So go see a Derm to get the skiny on your skin!
