Watermelon is the feel-good fruit of summer. And clocking in at only 45 calories per cup, you can indulge without guilt. Not only is watermelon good for your figure, it’s also great for your face. Watermelon is rich in vitamin A and C, and lycopene – these are all powerful antioxidants that reduce damage to healthy cells, and some studies show that lycopene may have the ability to protect our skin from sunburn and sun damage. It’s also 92 percent water, and of course hydration is key during the warm weather, and is a well-known factor contributing to our skin’s smooth and healthy glow. Lastly, substances in watermelon help to produce a very small molecule of gas called nitric oxide (NO), which relaxes and expands blood vessels, and allows blood to flow more freely. This has tremendous benefits to our cardiovascular system and heart health, and increases the stream of nutrients and oxygen to our skin.
Quench your skin with our refreshing smoothie below.
- 2 cups watermelon chunks, with seeds removed
- 1 tablespoon fresh mint leaves
- 1 cup lemon yogurt (or Greek yogurt for extra protein)
- 1 tablespoon honey
- Dash cinnamon
Puree all ingredients together in the container of a food processor or blender. Makes 2 servings.
