Chiropractor: Chad Morton
Being of Irish decent, 40-year-old Chad Morton burns easily in the sun. While this Toronto-based chiropractor believes that the key to good health lies in a strong mobile spine, he is also becoming more cognizant of the health of his skin these days.
“Like most men I was vaguely aware of the importance of proper skin care until several members of my family had to have pre-cancerous skin tags and moles removed. I grew up thinking that sunscreen was something you only wore in the summer, but UV rays are present all year round. And white men, especially, are at a greater risk of skin cancer.” Morton’s right. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the majority of people diagnosed with melanoma are white men over age 50. Adults over age 40, especially men, have the highest annual exposure to UV.
We dropped by his Harbourfront condo – complete with sun-blocking blinds on the windows – to get the skinY on his skincare staples.
Skin Type? Rouge.
Your most recent What The Yuck?! skin moment? I had a big blind zit on the side of my neck. It felt like a massive boil. I don’t know what it was exactly, but to the chagrin of dermatologists everywhere, it went away after a week of squeezing and pinching. I use the Kellett Gel Moisturizer after any breakout because it helps fade pigmentation left behind from acne. Good for pickers!
Your 3 can’t-live without skincare staples?
When I travel I never leave home without some kind of shaving cream (Dermalogica’s pre guard is a must), moisturizer, and deodorant.
Do you use anything at night? I just started using Murad’s Time Release Retinol Concentrate serum on my crow’s feet. It wasn’t my idea – the girlfriend’s. Give me a few more weeks to report back on my progress. So far, I haven’t been carded at LCBO yet.
We just peeked in your shower and spotted: Cetaphil facial cleanser, Redken shampoo, Murad Acne Body Wash, and Axe body wash. Curious, do you have Bacne? Sometimes, according to my girlfriend. She got me the Murad scrub but I need her help applying this on. It’s interesting, as a chiropractor, I see backs all day and I see a lot of spots of all kinds there.
If you could trade dermatologist with any celebrity, who would it be?
George Clooney. He’s a man’s man, who has greyed well.
Favorite food? My mom’s salmon loaf.
Most overused word? Totally. I’m guilty of it, even as a 40-year-old man.
Favorite saying? Awesome Possum.
Do you have any sage skin care advice for men? Use sunscreen every day. Spray formulas are my favourite, here’s why.
