JLo glow in a bottle

BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfector in Topaz

$41 at Sephora

What it is: a tinted hydrating sheer liquid luminizer that veils skin in a soft penalized glow with the added benefit of broad-spectrum sun protection. May be used on the face and body.

How it works: The ultra-fine, naturally derived mica particles reflect light to subtly highlight the face and diffuse uneven tone. The anti-aging benefits include SPF 25 to protect against 96% of UVA/UVB rays, plus antioxidants A, B, D and E to fend off daily skin stessors caused by free radicals.

Why I love it: It gives me Jlo glow. I’m serious. I don’t have the clearest skin in the world so I tend to go for mattifying foundations and steer clear of anything that has “shimmering” on the package.

If you have fine lines, large pores, acne scarring, or pigmentation, then you know where I’m coming from. Most illuminators contain a ton of shimmer that gets stuck in the lines or crevices and just magnifies the problem. Forget the glow! You end up looking like you smeared your face with a stick of sparkle glue. There is a fine line between luminous and shimmer, and this is the only illuminator that gets it right. It glides on smoothly and provides just the right amount of silky, bronzy luminosity – JLo skin in a bottle.

I got the chance to speak to Kerry Cole, a BECCA makeup artist at the Sephora launch this past week. I asked her if this product was good for mature skin, and she mentioned that her 68-year-old mother loves this product, calling it her “adult glow.” Here’s a video clip of Cole telling the story. Sorry for the background noise – it was a media event with a Great Gatsby theme hence the 1920s music.

Caveats

  • The colour comes out a bit intense but it blends quickly and provides a healthy sun-kissed tint.
  • Not meant to provide full coverage so if you have problem skin, try this over foundation and concealer.

Keep in mind that that with the right skincare products and treatments, you can get your face to the state where it won’t need cover-up. I found that doing monthly IPLs and using retinol at night for the past six months has helped to shrink my pores and even out skin tone, which has made this product work for me much better than it would have last year. Make your skin glow on its own so you don’t have to rely too heavily on makeup.
